Akendi's professional development UX courses and certifications are designed to provide theory mixed with practical application exercises. Designed and taught by Akendi professionals in the field, attendees gain a foundational understanding of the UX design process & techniques.

Akendi UX Certifications

Akendi offers a professional User Experience certification programs that will help to recognize your user experience research & design knowledge in your organisation. We offer UX certification in Canada and the UK:

UX Certification can be done as an intensive 5 day program plus exam or a few courses at a time over as long as two years. Akendi UX Certification requires the passing of a final written exam. The cost of the exam is included in the certification fee.

Participants that pass both the CXD exam plus the CXR exam qualify for our CXS designation.

Is this training right for me?

Our program is appropriate for practitioners and leaders who are involved in the creation of product and service experiences and want to learn more about a robust approach for creating successful experiences. The courses are not focused on how to use specific software applications like Photoshop or Axure.

Custom on-site user experience training courses

Akendi also delivers introductory and advanced corporate custom UX training courses to groups of 4 or more, either on-site or in one of our own training facilities. Dominira Saul

Dominira Saul, Msc

Chief Experience Architect

Dominira believes that behind every well-designed product or service there is a thorough understanding of the actual users and their needs. Dominira Saul, having presented many influential research and design outcomes to clients at all levels of the private and public sector, is very adept at putting his beliefs into practice. Dominira remains focused on ensuring clear transfer of design recommendations and most importantly, rationale to our clients. Dominira is committed to working closely with clients to ensure their success. He is a fluently bilingual communicator who has lectured at the university level, and delivered many training courses.

Dom has an MSc. in User Interface Design from London Guildhall University, a BA in Psychology from Carleton University and over 12 years of usability research and interaction design experience in the UK and Canada.

Tedde van Gelderen

Tedde van Gelderen, MA


Tedde infuses Akendi, its services and methodology with his drive to make customer and user experiences go beyond a singular product or service. Experience Thinking™ starts with the holistic experience customers and users have with an organisation over time, then guides the enabling technologies & content to create intentional experiences. In his view, Experience Thinking™ should become deeply rooted in organisation's creation processes, research usability testing and experience design in both public and private sectors.

Prior to Akendi, Tedde was a founding partner of Maskery & Associates in 2001. He has worked for companies including KPMG Management Consulting and Philips Design in the Netherlands and Nortel Networks in Canada.

Athena Herrmann


Design Director

Athena Herrmann is Design Director at Akendi. She brings 14 years of expertise in print, web, brand identity, and mobile, software and application design.

From concept to completion, Athena possesses a rare combination of design skills. She works with an immaculate attention to detail, a clear grasp of the target and message as a whole, extraordinary creative talent, and the production skills to bring her ideas to life. Athena delivers projects within budget and time restraints while maintaining Akendi’s consistently high standards. She has had the opportunity to work with some of North America’s most respected organisations including The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, RBC, Whole Foods Market, SAP America, York Region, Blackberry, the Government of Canada, the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer.

Athena holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York and has earned the professional designation of Registered Graphic Designer, Ontario.

Shaun Illingworth

Shaun Illingworth, PhD

Vice President

Ensuring research is relevant and actionable is what drives Shaun day-to-day. With over 17 years of experience in both enterprise and startup technology companies, Shaun is an experienced business strategist, creative thinker and market research executive with a rare focus on user-centered design and its resulting business value.

With extensive North American and European market research and market development experience, Shaun has successfully built several marketing and business relationships from the ground up – borne from a focus on customer values and the user experience.

Shaun began his career in Boston as a product and market research consultant; he holds a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Northeastern University and is a professional moderator and workshop facilitator.

Prior to joining Akendi, Shaun held a variety of senior management positions in strategic marketing, market research and business development, with companies like Nortel, March Networks, and Inuk Networks. ultimately be reflected in the products and service experiences.

Leo Poll

Leo Poll, PhD


Technically everything is possible, making it work for people is where the real challenges are. Addressing these challenges from an end-user perspective in a way that makes business sense is what has driven Leo throughout his career.

With more than 15 years of experience he is able to bring an ability of strong lateral thinking combined with very broad domain knowledge of applications/markets and technical enablers.

Yvonne Shek

Yvonne Shek, MSc.

VP User Experience

Yvonne is passionate about helping her clients make sound business decisions and meeting the needs of users and customers at the same time. This involves integrative thinking and using the most suitable UX methods for the situation. It sometimes even extends to creating new ways to solve problems. For example, Yvonne developed the “Scenario Description Swimlane Diagram” method during the time she worked with a government client. Since, this deliverable has been featured in two well-known user experience books: “Universal Methods of Design” by Bella Martin and Bruce Hanington (2012), and “See What I Mean – How to Use Comics to Communicate Ideas” by Kevin Cheng (2013).

Yvonne has over 20 years of experience in digital strategy, UX research, and interaction design; and ten years in managing teams of user experience consultants. She has worked with Fortune 500 and corporate clients, government agencies, universities, and non-profits. Yvonne often helps her clients make business and design decisions through workshops, facilitation, and coaching.

Prior to joining Akendi, Yvonne worked at Cossette, Sapient, and in recent years, partnered with Leo Burnett (Arc Worldwide). She worked at nForm User Experience Inc. before running her own consulting firm, Integri Consulting.

Yvonne has been the guest lecturer at various colleges and universities. Yvonne also attends and speaks at UX conferences and is an active member of the IA/IxD community. Yvonne holds a M.Sc. from University College London, and a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto. Prior to working in the private sector, Yvonne was a human factors research scientist at Defense Research and Development Canada in Toronto.

Daniel Iaboni

Daniel Iaboni, PhD

Principal Experience Architect

Daniel is dedicated to creating and improving software, website and interface designs to provide an exceptional interaction among users, their environment and their tools. To achieve this goal, Daniel applies knowledge and techniques from engineering, computer science, psychology and anthropology learned while completing a Doctorate in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo with a focus on human factors, cognitive ergonomics and user-centered design.

Prior to joining Akendi, Daniel was the user experience designer for Brock Solutions, and was instrumental in the design of software used by airports and airlines around the world. In addition, Daniel has provided independent human factors consulting services for several large and medium enterprises.

Hamilton Hernandez

Hamilton Hernandez, PhD

Senior Experience Architect

Hamilton is a User Experience and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) advocate with over 8 years of experience in the field. He dreams of a world where technology allows humans to reach maximum potential in meaningful and enjoyable ways. Hamilton holds a B.A.Sc. in Computer Science, a M.Sc. in Engineering focused on HCI, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Queen’s University where he focused on Human Factors and User Experience in the Gamification of exercise and rehabilitation.

Prior to joining Akendi, Hamilton was a User Experience Researcher & Designer for Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, where he used his skills in user-centered design, interaction design, usability testing and multidisciplinary research to research, design and build effective computer systems for therapists and children with motor disabilities. Hamilton has also taught courses in computer science and HCI at the university level for over 6 years and published highly cited articles about his work in top international conferences in HCI.

Amanda Billark

Amanda Billark, BDes

Visual Designer

Amanda brings 8 years of multi-disciplinary design experience to Akendi’s visual design team. Studying fine art before completing her degree in Industrial Design at OCAD University, she has a deep understanding of how user needs translate into visual design. Equally creative and analytical, she loves strategic problem solving as much as creating. Her diverse background enables her to create visual designs that are equally beautiful and smart, matching user and business needs with stunning graphic design.

Not only a talented designer, she is also enthusiastic about teaching others about visual design and how it relates to UX. She brings an energetic approach to her courses, striving to keep the end user at heart as she shares visual design knowledge and theory with course participants.

Cancellation Policy

Training program cost is per person as stated with a minimum 4 participants per course. Akendi reserves the right to cancel a scheduled training session up to 5 business days prior to the training if a minimum class size of 4 participants has not been attained. Akendi is not responsible for any travel or other costs incurred as result of a cancellation.

Cancellation fee is 15% if you cancel more than 4 weeks prior to training start date. We provide a 50% refund between 4 and 2 weeks before a course. No refunds when cancelling within 2 weeks of course start date.

UX training FAQ


> Registration

Is this training right for me? Our program is appropriate for practitioners and leaders who are involved in the creation of product and service experiences and want to learn more about a robust approach for creating successful experiences. The courses are not focused on how to use specific software applications like Photoshop or Axure.
Do I have to take all the courses in one week? OR can I spread them out? Courses can be taken one at a time over a two-year period. However, by registering for the full week you can pay for the certification, which works out to less than the individual courses when added up.
What are the prerequisites? There are no specific prerequisites for the courses.
Can I register for the CXD/R/S certification, but take the courses one at a time over the year? No. If you register for the full certification, it is understood that all courses will be attended in that session and will not carry over to future sessions. However, you can register for courses individually over the span of two years and still achieve the certification after passing the exam.
If English isn’t my native language, do you require a TOEFL, IELTS or GRE score to attend? Though English language test scores are not required for any of our courses, the course content revolves around abstract concepts and requires a firm grasp of the English language. We recommend a fairly high English language proficiency to ensure that all concepts and exercises are followed and understood (approximately TOEFL 80-90 score, IELTS 5.0 - 6.0 points, TOEIC 785-944 points).
Is there a cut-off date to register? Registration will stay open until the start of training or a maximum number of students have been reached (25).
When do you post your training schedule? We try to post at least six months out. When we have a new schedule we will post it on the website. If you would like to be notified of upcoming courses, please register to be notified via email (see the side column for sign-up).

> Payment

Do you offer any discounts? A group discount of 10% is also available when three people from the same organisation register for the same courses at the same time. If more than six people are attending from your organisation, please contact to discuss custom training options
How can I pay? Courses and Certification programs can be paid through creditcard. If requested, we will issue an invoice statement in addition to the pdf confirmation that is sent out as part of the credit card payment.
Is there a discount if I have to travel to attend? (Fly in) Unfortunately, no discount is given for those who travel to take the training.
Do you accept personal cheques? Currently, Akendi doesn't accept personal cheques. You can pay through credit card or invoice, to be completed prior to start of training session.
Can I pay over the phone? We do not accept payments over the phone. Please use the online form for both registration and payment.
How can I have an invoice sent to me so I can submit it for payment? To request an invoice, please contact
Are there additional expenses aside from the course fees? The cost of the course includes training materials. However, travel, meals, and accommodation are not included in course fees if these are required.

> Certification Exam

Is Akendi certification recognized world wide? Akendi UX training and certification is quickly becoming a prestigious and recognized postgraduate certification for UX practitioners. We work hard to ensure our materials are current and our instructors are qualified to lead advanced training in UX.
When will I see exam results? Each certification requires a passing grade of 70% on the final exam. Results will be calculated and sent approximately two weeks after the exam date.
What if I fail the exam? If you fail the certification exam, you can retake the exam with the next session. At this point the exams must be proctored by an Akendi representative and must be done in person. We do not currently offer remote or online exams.
The online registration form bundles all nine courses with the exam together. Is there any way I can register for the exam separately? If you have completed the required courses, and when you are ready to write the exam, please contact us to indicate which exam session you would prefer to write with. There is no online registration required as we will verify your attendance at each course before adding you to the exam session.
Can I write the certification exam without taking all the courses listed? No. All the required courses must be taken within a two-year time frame in order to write the certification exam.
What is the difference between CXD and CXR? Akendi offers three types of certification: CXD (Certified User Experience Designer), CXR (Certified User Experience Researcher) and CXS (Certified User Experience Specialist). The Research and Design certification can be done in a weeklong intensive training. To complete both certifications qualifies you as a Certified User Experience Specialist.

> Travel

I'm travelling to attend the course and can't stay to write the exam. Do you offer the exam on-line or remotely? Exams must be written on-site and are proctored by an Akendi staff member. We suggest contacting us at to discuss alternative arrangements before you register.
Is Akendi coming to my city? Akendi regularly travels to deliver certification training. If you are interested in having your city host a session, and would like to be notified when that happens, please contact us at
Where and when is the next course? The time and location of the next courses are posted in the training section of the Akendi website. Please let us know if you'd like a training course in your location and we will take this into consideration.
Do you provide discounts on accommodation if I have to travel for the training? No, Akendi does not currently have any relationships that can offer a discount on accommodation in all the cities we provide training.
Do you accept international students? Students have traveled from outside of Canada and UK to attend our training programs, however, as we are not an educational institution we cannot provide a student Visa.

> What to bring?

Do I need a laptop? A laptop is recommended for the Information Architecture, Usability Testing and GUI Design courses.
Can I add course outcomes to my portfolio? Though group work and hands on work is performed in the programs, the exercises are designed to develop skills and performance in UX, not to build a portfolio. Most courses are a blend of theory and practicum.
Do I have to complete the courses within a certain timeframe? Most participants complete the certification within a one-week intensive program, however, if you are completing certification through individual courses you have two years to complete. If more time is required, you may request an extension by emailing

> What is the Training like?

How big are the classes? Class sizes vary from 5 to 25 participants. We limit the maximum number of participants to ensure enough opportunity for questions and discussions during the training sessions.
How do I know if the Akendi training programs will benefit me? We recommend that you read through the course descriptions before registering to get a sense of the course content and outcomes. As we are not career counsellors we are not able to provide much guidance on your personal benefit.
Have previous Akendi certification alum been UX/UI designers looking for skill upgrades? Or prospective career changers as well? We have found that both groups have been present in our training.
Is there any information on whether the training has helped find new employment in the field? Though we have received positive feedback on the impact that attendees have had in their respective jobs, we do not document nor actively collect long-term results.
Are the training materials available online or in PDF? At this time we do not provide training materials in PDF or online.
What type of materials do you use in the course? Each participant receives a handout and additional resources to be used during exercises. Participants of the certification track also receive a large poster of the Akendi Experience Thinking process.
What does a typical training day look like? We start at 9.00 with introductions of everyone with an actual start of 9.15. There is a mid morning break around 10.30, lunch is at 12.00 to 13.00 with in the afternoon a break at 14.30. Each day ends between 16.30 and 17.00 depending on the conversation and any questions.
