September 17, 2015 / Canadian Business and PROFIT today ranked Akendi number 321 on the 27th annual PROFIT 500, the definitive ranking of Canada’s Fastest-Growing Companies. Published in the October issue of Canadian Business and at PROFITguide.com, the PROFIT 500 ranks Canadian businesses by revenue growth over the past five years.
Akendi, a product innovation, user experience design and usability research firm, made the 2015 PROFIT 500 list with five-year revenue growth of 165%.
“We’re exceptionally pleased to be recognized by PROFIT,” says Akendi President Tedde van Gelderen. "This achievement is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of our employees, who are the driving force behind our continued growth and success."
The achievement follows recent business and design recognition for Akendi. Last year, Akendi placed in the Branham300 list as one of the Top Tech Companies for 2014. The Regional Municipality of York, an Akendi client, was also recognized in 2014 with awards from both the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and the Web Marketing Association for the user-centered design Akendi developed for the york.ca website.
“The PROFIT 500 represent the highest tier of entrepreneurialism in Canada,” says James Cowan, Editor-in-chief of PROFIT and Canadian Business. “They should be lauded for the positive economic contributions they’ve made to their communities—and the entire country. They are examples of what can be accomplished with innovation, discipline and determination."
July 10, 2015 / NB Power is the primary electrical utility provider for the province of New Brunswick, currently serving more than 650,000 residential and industrial consumers. Akendi utilized our Experience Thinking(tm) process to create a new user experience for consumers giving them quicker and easier access to the information they need while offering them an enjoyable experience. Akendi talked extensively with users to understand their needs and what they do on the website and developed personas from insights gained in this research as well as research with stakeholders. These insights were then translated into a new information architecture, enhanced user experience and striking visual design that expertly translates business objectives and user requirements into a modern, beautiful, and sophisticated web experience.
The outcome of this project was not only providing NB Power and their customers with a usable, useful and engaging website, but creating a vehicle for them to completely reinvent the way they interact with NB Power, enhancing their relationship with their customers. Affinity Systems implemented the final outcome as designed by Akendi. To see the website introduction, watch the video.

His talk entitled 'Designing for Usability in the Internet of Things Era' explored the challenges Designers will face when designing for usability in the era of IoT. While the tools and techniques that we employ as researchers and designers will be largely unchanged, we will be forced to broaden our focus as technology advances. Designers will be required to think in terms of service design and multi-modal interaction as many tasks and interactions associated with IoT span devices and contexts. Stay tuned for future conversations about IoT from Akendi and check out IoT613. (www.iot613.com), the Akendi lead innovation conference which will explore how the Internet of Things will shape the future. March 31, 2015 / As designers and researchers, the tools and techniques we employ have remained largely unchanged over the past few decades. Currently, the promise of the Internet of Things is forcing us to broaden our focus as we apply those tools. Even the most entrenched interaction, visual, or product designer will be required to think in different terms as many common tasks and interactions that we take for granted become multi-modal. As IoT becomes more and more of a reality, we also have to take stock of the fact that we are not only designing for the interaction between a user and a product, but also product to product interaction and interactions that span modalities, devices, and different contexts of use. Join Dominira as he will examine the concept of the expert user as more and more of these interactions become seamless, ubiquitous and invisible. Register for this TPMA event! If you’re interested in having Akendi present at your organisation, drop us a line at email@example.com.
