Developing an Information Architecture

User Research, Usage Scenarios and Information Architecture

Our structured approach to design involves the several activities during development of an information architecture:

•  Understand and, if necessary, capture the vision and business requirements

• Conduct user research and field research to uncover what goals the user has and what their use will be with the web site or service. This will result in usage scenarios that will be used to

• Organize information: architect a site's content based on what we know about the users needs and their behaviors – the organization of information on the website or intranet. This is done by card sorting and creating the information structure that allows the user to navigate effectively and efficiently through the content.

• Develop a labeling structure. Labels, be they within page headings, contextual links,  or index terms, must reflect the users' language whilst staying accurate and to the point. This determines the use of scientific terminology or lay man terminology where most appropriate.

• Develop a website sitemap i.e. a reflection for navigating through the information structure that supports location - a clear indication of where you are in the site.
